Why fabricators ask for SVG (not just a high-DPI PNG)

LED neon flex is bent along a path. Pixels describe appearance; paths describe where the tube must run. Auto-tracing a PNG inside the shop burns time and introduces interpretation error on counters, joins, and tiny flourishes. An SVG (or Illustrator AI / EPS) that already contains clean centerlines or outlineable strokes lets quoting start from geometry instead of guesswork.

Prefer vector-native containers: SVG for web handoff, AI for layered shop edits, EPS or vector PDF when partners request them. A PDF that only embeds a flat raster still fails—open it and confirm selectable paths exist. Gradients, soft shadows, and photographic fills do not become neon; convert those to solid colour runs or move them to printed acrylic backing notes.

Stroke width: match the tube, not the print stroke

In branding work, a 1–2 pt stroke can look elegant on screen. On a neon wall, that line has to become silicone or PVC housing around an LED strip. Industry product faces commonly sit somewhere in the 4–16 mm range; many indoor logo signs land near 8–12 mm, and shops often treat ~10 mm as a planning default until the exact flex SKU is locked. Viewing distance matters: closer desk or reception signs can read thinner; storefront distances usually need a fatter face.

Compound paths, overlaps, and Pathfinder cleanup

Brand marks often arrive as compound shapes: outer silhouette with boolean holes, overlapping script joins, or stacked fills that look continuous on screen. Neon does not care how pretty the Appearance panel looks—it needs one continuous path per lit run. Unmerged overlaps can read as cut lines; tiny open gaps under half a millimetre can force an unwanted break in the tube.

Cleanup rules designers should run before export:

If your mark is a filled badge with a wordmark inside, decide which parts glow. Often the wordmark becomes neon strokes while the badge moves to cut acrylic—document that split in layer names such as Neon_WarmWhite and Backing_Only.

Centerline paths vs outlined logo shapes

Two valid approaches show up in neon production files:

  1. Centerline / single-stroke art — open or continuous strokes drawn down the middle of each lit run, with stroke weight set to tube width for the client mockup. Fabricators bend to the spine of the path.
  2. Outlined / expanded shapes — logo fills expanded to closed shapes; the shop derives a centerline or offset toolpath from those outlines.

For logo neon, designers who already think in strokes (monoline marks, script pens) should stay on centerlines. Dense print logos with thick filled letters usually need a redraw: pen-tool a single continuous route through each character, then preview with the correct stroke width. Export from Adobe Illustrator

Illustrator remains the default shop language for layered neon art. A reliable export sequence:

  1. Set document units to millimetres (or inches) and place a dimension note for target width × height.
  2. Work in RGB for LED colour intent; note approximate hex or RGB values on colour layers.
  3. Type → Create Outlines on every live text object.
  4. Object → Expand Appearance / Expand where effects still hide live strokes.
  5. Pathfinder → Unite overlapping script and merged logo parts that should glow as one run.
  6. Remove unused swatches, hidden layers, and linked PNG/JPG embeds.
  7. Name layers by neon colour and purpose (Neon_IceBlue, Neon_Pink, Acrylic_Cut).
  8. File → Export → Export As… → SVG. Prefer “Presentation Attributes,” decimal precision that keeps curves smooth, and “Convert to Outlines” if any text remains.
  9. Optionally save a parallel .ai for shop edits; keep both files in the same handoff zip when possible.

Before you close the file, zoom to 6400% on joins and counters. If you see double paths, hairline gaps, or a clipped bitmap, fix it now—quotes stall on dirty geometry more often than on creative complexity.

Export from Figma

Figma is common for brand systems, but neon shops still need path-clean vectors. Translate carefully:

  1. Flatten boolean groups that should become single shapes; avoid leaving unresolved unions that only look merged.
  2. Outline text (Right-click → Outline stroke / Outline text) so the SVG does not depend on missing fonts.
  3. Convert thin strokes that represent neon runs to the target millimetre weight at export scale, or note “centerline — apply 10 mm stroke at fabrication.”
  4. Put each colour on its own frame or clearly named group; neon colours are separate tube builds, not fills on one mesh.
  5. Remove image fills and effects (blur, shadow, gradient) from the neon layer.
  6. Export → SVG. In export settings, enable outline text if available; avoid “include ‘id’ attribute” clutter if it bloats the file, but keep layer structure readable.
  7. Open the SVG once in a vector app (Illustrator, Affinity, Inkscape) to verify paths survived Figma’s exporter—especially compound holes and rotated groups.

If Figma’s SVG still carries transforms and nested groups that worry you, paste into Illustrator, Expand, Unite, then re-export a production SVG. That five-minute pass often saves a day of quote back-and-forth.
